Behemoth - Ezkaton
The Polish Behemoth probably thought after releasing At The Arena Ov Aion – Live Apostasy at November last year, the fans would still be hungry for their used to be black metal which has transformed into death metal more and more over the years. It must have been this assumption that drove them to release the seven tracked mini-album Ezkaton through Suburban.Fortunately, Behemoth actually presents something to their fans that can be considered a worthy addition to the offered albums so far. The first two tracks on the mini-album are rare material, followed by a Master’s Hammer cover and a Ramones cover. The final three tracks are live material from the Behemoth gig at Leeuwarden, dating from October 2007. I must say, the quality of this live production is of a relatively high standard.
The opening song, 'Chant for Ezkaton 2000 E.V.', definitely stands out on the album. Once the melody of the guitars start, it gets stuck into your head; a feeling which is reinforced by the final track on the album, which is the live version of 'Chant for Ezkaton 2000 E.V.'. Although to me Behemoth can be described as a death metal band, you can still hear some black metal influences when you listen very carefully. Besides the changes in tempo and the brutality of the music, every now and then I can taste, very briefly, a bit of atmosphere which portrays their original roots.
You might wonder: why would Behemoth release more live material after releasing a live album not too long ago? Obviously, to that question I can’t answer, but I can reassure you that the live material on this album hasn’t been included on At the Arena Ov Aion – Live Apostasy. So if you are a fan, you will probably share my opinion Ezkaton is a must have album to add to your precious Behemoth collection.
